Diavolezza challenge 🎿 🏁

Updated: Sep 20, 2021

Story

Recently I introduced myself to skimo and when spending some time in Engadin area I found some skimo races. More info 3summits.ch. The 3 summits consist in 3 skimo vertical races (Diavolezza2978, Corvatsch3303, Lagalb2893). Unfortunately due to COVID-19 the races were cancelled this year but I could find that Diavolezza challenge is permanently marked. So on a good sunny day I decided to give it a try.

We head to Bernina Diavolezza train station and from there we found the start. The beginning was good but after 300m ⬆️ we got to a quite steep part and the snow is some parts was good and some parts icy due to old tracks. That parts goes next to a black piste called "Schwarzer Hang". When going down we looked at it and looks quite steep 😌.

After that we got another part which was more manageable on the right side of the slopes. The last part to arrive to "Diavolezza firm" was again quite hard snow and steep but that was the last challenge before arriving to the last flat. I must admit, that it was close to get rolling down a few meters, but was a good place to train bad conditions since there was no cliff 😅.

The challenge itself was tougher than expected. We saw some people going up which switched to the red slope and some other who sticked to the marked touring path. With fresh snow conditions would have been easier.

The top rewards with views of the 4000m of Graubünden, Piz Bernina, surrounded by glaciers and other 3900m peaks. After the views we were ready for a nice descent ⛷️

Bonus

➕ If you are an experienced skier you can do the Morteratsch glacier run to the other side.
